Old Courthouse

Located at the historic intersection of Main and Ellicott Street in downtown Batavia, NY, the Genesee County Courthouse stands as a testament to Greek Revival architecture and a centerpiece of local history. Constructed in 1841 from locally sourced Onondaga limestone, the courthouse has remained a significant symbol in Genesee County, housing many of its government offices and playing a vital role in its civic life since its first court session in 1843.

The courthouse features a distinct square design, with each façade spanning five bays. The front (facing east) stands two and a half stories tall, while the back (facing west) rises three full stories. Originally built with a sweeping porch supported by six heavy stone pilasters, renovations in 1931 expanded the building to accommodate additional office space. Today, the front entrance is framed by a central bay and the building serves as the headquarters for the County Manager’s Office, the Legislative Office, and the County Attorney’s Office.
