Police Bureau Overview

The Police Bureau of the Genesee County Sheriff's Office includes several key divisions and personnel, responsible for maintaining law and order throughout the county.

Sheriff’s Office Administration

The Administration team is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Sheriff's Office. This team includes:

  • Sheriff
  • Undersheriff
  • Chief Deputy Road Patrol
  • Chief Deputy Criminal
  • Sheriff’s Confidential Secretary

Clerical Support Personnel

The Clerical Personnel provide essential administrative support and consist of:

  • Principal Financial Clerks
  • Financial Clerk-Typists

Road Patrol Division

The Road Patrol Division is the backbone of the Police Bureau, maintaining mobile patrol units throughout the county. This division performs tasks vital to the mission of the department, focusing on law enforcement and public safety.

Key responsibilities of the Road Patrol Division include:

  • Enforcement of laws and apprehension of violators
  • Investigation of suspicious and criminal activities
  • Crime prevention
  • Preservation of public peace and maintenance of order
  • Providing police-related public services

Role of the Sheriff

In a democracy, police agencies are tasked with enforcing laws and protecting lives and property. County Law, Article 17, Section 650 acknowledges the Sheriff as the County conservator of the peace. For years, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Police Bureau has served the community by creating a safe and secure environment for residents and businesses.

Criminal Investigation Division

The Criminal Investigation Division supports the Patrol Division by conducting detailed investigations. Their work requires specialized skills and extensive training beyond the scope of typical patrol duties.

The functions of the Investigation Division include:

  • Investigating criminal and non-criminal incidents
  • Obtaining information and evidence to identify suspects
  • Arresting offenders
  • Recovering stolen property
  • County-wide drug enforcement
  • Presenting cases for prosecution

The Criminal Investigation Division provides professional investigative services, ensuring that the department and community benefit from in-depth, specialized investigations that patrol officers are not able to conduct due to time constraints and patrol duties.
