Youth Assistance

"Shaping the workforce one youth at a time…"

Look what the Genesee County Career Center has to offer young adults between the ages of 14-24!

This youth program is designed to help older youth enter or get back into the workforce, and this time to stay! The three phase program begins with the assessment process, phase two puts the youth in to a short-term training or a work experience opportunity, and the final phase follows each youth until such time that they are working and remain employed for a year.

The Assessment Process: Phase 1

During this phase, you will participate in a series of assessment tests that will test your abilities and measure your aptitudes. Together with our career counselor, an employment plan will be developed that will be the outline for the next two phases. During this time, youth will explore careers and make decisions based on the assessment findings.

Training: Phase 2

During this phase, you will sit down with your career counselor and decide the best course of action to follow. It might be immediate employment for a person who is ready, or training for those who are in need, and possibly a work experience that will lead into unsubsidized employment. Whatever the case, you will have the option as to the course of your career.

Follow-up: Phase 3

During the final phase, you will have successfully achieved employment, or possibly chosen a different course i.e. continue post-secondary education or enter the military. Whatever the case, your career counselor and you will continue to talk to ensure that you remain on the path of independence and success. If there are concerns at work, your counselor can assist. If you decide that a new job is needed, then we can assist. Whatever the follow-up need, your counselor will be there to help.

What are some of the benefits?

While enrolled in the youth program, you will learn about your skill level, aptitudes, personality type, and overall abilities. Youth will have an opportunity to try out their skills with a local employer, and if all goes well, eventually be placed at that location in a permanent unsubsidized job.

What's in it for employers?

The businesses get an employee that is ready, willing and able to perform the required job. Through our wage subsidy, the business will not have to pay any wages during the training period, allowing them to train each youth in the policies and procedures of their business, at no cost. This has traditionally been a period of lower productivity, whose cost has been paid by the employer. Not with this program, as we will cover the cost of the work experience and assist the employer as they train the youth.

Can any business participate?

Yes, as long as they are willing to hire the youth at the end of the work experience, they can participate. We are looking for employers that want to take a youth under their wing and shape them into a quality employee.

Does the youth have to reside in Genesee County to qualify?

Yes, the youth funding that we receive is for residents of Genesee County, but interested youth can still contact us and we can give you information on programs in other counties.

What are the eligibility guidelines?

Interested youth should stop in, call or email us (information below) to see if you qualify. All youth will qualify for some sort of service here at the Genesee County Career Center.
